From Miss Polonia Scholarship Essay:
My name is Sarah Novak and I am seventeen years old. I was born in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, but I shortly moved to Staten Island when I was seven years old. Throughout high school, I was a part of many extra-curricular activities. I became the sports editor of The Log, the school newspaper at Curtis High School. My position required me to read articles written by staff and create layouts to place each story on the correct page. I also developed a passion for volleyball. I began playing on the junior varsity team and advanced to varsity in my junior year. Playing volleyball has taught me a lot of things such a dedication and teamwork. I developed strong relationships and values that I will carry with me. I was also a part of the Guitar Ensemble at Curtis High School. The Guitar Ensemble would play for school functions as well as community events in Staten Island. In my free time, I enjoy learning songs by my favorite artists such as Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, and U2. I enjoy reading books by Sir Conan Doyle, Sara Gruen, and J.K. Rowling. My family has always supported and encouraged me in everything I do and I am blessed with a brother and sister. Polish culture is very important to me because I love tradition and feel that it should be preserved. After attending the Henryk Sienkiewicz Polish School in Brooklyn for eight years, I learned a great deal of our Polish ancestry and our major historical accomplishments. I also attended art classes at St. Stanislaus Kostka and sang in the church choir. I think that everyone should embrace their Polish heritage.I plan to major in biology in college. I will be attending the College of Staten Island in the fall. Biology has always interested because there are always new things being discovered. I plan to attend medical school and become a pediatrician. I love working with children and I would like to make a difference in their lives.
